Further remand for hit-and-run accused

A 21-year-old Te Kuiti man accused of the hit-and-run death of an Otorohanga teenager has been further remanded on bail.

Broc Kawhena has pleaded not guilty to the charges of manslaughter and driving while under the influence of alcohol causing death.

Ocean Heke, 17, also known as Lovely, was found dead on the side of State Highway 3 following a birthday party in April. Her injuries were consistent with being hit by a vehicle.

Kawhena made a short appearance in the High Court at Hamilton on Tuesday.

Kawhena is due reappear on August 16 for a pre-trial hearing.

He has elected to face trial by jury which is set to begin on November 28.
