Online threats, which appear to have links to gangs, made against an Auckland teen convicted of manslaughter have sparked a police investigation.

Last week Vincent Skeen, 19, was found not guilty of murder, but guilty of manslaughter, over the death of promising 17-year-old rugby league player Luke Tipene.

Following the conviction, a social media post which features a Head Hunters gang logo and says Skeen had been "marked", circulated online, prompting a police probe.

"Police are aware of a threat made towards Vincent Skeen via social media and are making further enquiries into this," a police spokesperson said.

The post has since been taken down.

Skeen killed Tipene, when he stabbed him in the neck with a broken glass bottle during a fight outside a Grey Lynn party in November, 2014.
