Gangs cause havoc in Canterbury town

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/06/2016 Cleo Fraser

A group of gang associates are facing charges after allegedly attacking two members of a rival group with sticks and a wheel brace in downtown Ashburton.

The pair were left battered and bruised and required medical treatment following the ambush at Mona Square on Saturday, police say.

Nine people were arrested on Wednesday morning in relation to the incident.

It's the third attack involving the Mongrel Mob and Black Power in recent weeks in the town.

"Police will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our communities and today's arrests show that those involved in such incidents will be held accountable for their actions," police said in a statement.

One of those facing charges has been released on bail, while the others are due to appear in Christchurch District Court on Thursday.
