Gareth Morgan forms political party

High profile millionaire economist and philanthropist Gareth Morgan has announced he's forming a new political party.

It will be called The Opportunities Party and its policies will promote fairness, reduced poverty, housing affordability, environmental sustainability and national pride.

"Today is ground zero for us - this is where we begin," he said on Friday.

"We have to break from the lethargy that establishment parties and career politicians have us locked in - their fear of losing votes makes them champions of inertia and only ever reluctant proponents of incremental change."

His first task is to sign up 500 paid-up members so the party can be registered.

He says he already has about 200.

Mr Morgan intends releasing policy priorities by the end of January and then there will be "a call to action" which he describes as a rebellion against the politics of mediocrity.

Mr Morgan announced his party in a Facebook post and later told reporters outside parliament he intended breaking the stranglehold that career politicians had on New Zealand.

"They look at their career prospects above everything else," he said.

The party will be list only and his initial policy platform seems to be centre-left.

Green Party co-leader James Shaw says he doesn't see why any of his party's supporters would vote for another which had virtually no chance of getting into parliament.

A list only party has to gain five per cent of the party vote in an election to get into parliament.
