The Opportunities Party has waited until just an hour before the candidate deadline for the Mt Albert by-election to reveal they will contest the seat.

The party, founded by millionaire philanthropist Gareth Morgan, will run Geoff Simmons against Labour's Jacinda Ardern and the Green Party's Julie Anne Genter.

Mr Simmons, who is a former general manager of The Morgan Foundation, is an economist and has been acting as the party's chief of staff.

"We are trying to bring some real debate and real choice into this by-election," Mr Morgan said on Wednesday.

"Yes, Labour has held this seat for a long time but we think there's no such thing as a safe seat anymore."

The by-election was called after Labour MP David Shearer resigned to lead United Nations peace keeping missions in South Sudan.

National is not running a candidate in the February 25 vote.

Joe Carolan, who ran for the Internet Mana Party in 2014, is this time running for Socialist Aotearoa.

Vin Tomar will represent the New Zealand People's Party.
