Gate chases repeat points title in Ireland

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 28/05/2016

New Zealand cyclist Aaron Gate will chase a second straight points classification title in the final stage of the Tour of Ireland.

Gate and other members of Cycling New Zealand's endurance track squad are using the tour as part of their preparations towards the Rio Olympics.

Riding for his An Post Chain Reaction professional team, he cemented his lead in the green jersey points competition after a gruelling 155km seventh stage, which featured three category-three climbs and the fearsome category-one ascent of Mt Leinster.

Five riders went clear to fight for the line honours, won by Irishman Eddie Dunbar.

Gate finished 56 seconds back in eighth while compatriot and double Olympic medallist Hayden Roulston, who was in the peloton just behind Gate, crossed in 24th.

The final stage takes the riders the 148kms from Kildare to the traditional finish at Skerries, north of Dublin.
