Uncapped Super Rugby first five-eighth Bryn Gatland has joined the Crusaders as injury cover.

The son of British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland, the 21-year-old has been signed on a temporary contract while first-choice playmaker Richie Mo'unga recovers from a hand injury.

The recovery period is expected to be six weeks.

Bryn Gatland remained largely in New Zealand while Warren forged a coaching career in Europe, including a decade in charge of Wales.

Bryn played one NPC game in 2015 for Waikato, the province where his former All Black father was a stalwart hooker for nine seasons.

A shift to North Harbour proved successful last year, with Bryn Gatland scoring 123 points as the union won promotion from the second-tier Championship division to the Premiership.

He would need a contract extension to have any chance of being with the Crusaders when they face a Lions side coached by his father in Christchurch on June 10.
