Gaze grabs second U23 World Cup title

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/05/2016

New Zealand's Sam Gaze has won his second successive under-23 World Cup mountain biking title, powering to victory in Germany.

Gaze finished 37 seconds clear of French cross country rival Titouan Carod at Albstadt to follow his win in the opening round at Cairns a month earlier.

He plans to contest the third round in La Bresse, France this week.

Gaze's priority is the world championships in the Czech Republic in late June, when he and defending champion Anton Cooper will both be on the under-23 start line.

Cooper competed in the elite men's category at Albstadt and was 51st - more than eight minutes behind the winner.

Both are racing for one available Olympic spot which will probably be decided in the race at Nove Mesto.
