Sam Gaze © Facebook/Sam Gaze Sam Gaze Olympic-bound mountain bike rider Sam Gaze will turn his attention to his Rio preparations after placing third at a World Cup race in Switzerland.

The recently-crowned under-23 world champion was beaten home by French winner Titouan Carod and Denmark's Simon Andreassen on a testing cross-country course at Lenzerheide.

Gaze finished in 1hr 18min 40sec, more than 2-1/2 minutes behind Carod, who could only manage sixth when Gaze dominated the under-23 race at the world championships two weeks ago.

Carod leads the World Cup series standings on 310 points, with Gaze second on 300.

The 20-year-old Commonwealth Games silver medallist will take a competitive break as he prepares for the Olympics, where he will be the lone Kiwi mountain bike representative.

Meanwhile, New Zealand champion George Brannigan managed a 10th-placed finish in the downhill discipline at the same World Cup.
