Mountain biker Sam Gaze has given himself a boost ahead of the Rio Olympics by winning the world under-23 cross-country title in the Czech Republic.

Gaze, 20, cleared out over the final two laps at the Nove Mesto na Morave course to secure the victory.

The 20-year-old from Cambridge, who rides professionally for Specialized Factory Team, follows in the footsteps of fellow New Zealander Anton Cooper in claiming the title.

Cooper was unable to defend his crown because of illness.

Gaze came into the world championships with two wins and a third placing in three World Cup races this season.

He will be New Zealand's sole mountain bike representative at the Olympics in August.
