Germany's flash research ship RV Sonne is in Auckland and members of the public will be able to have a look at it.

Commissioned in 2014 by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Sonne heralded a new era for German and international marine research and is expected to be in use for at least 30 years. It's the flagship of their research fleet.

There are about 600sq m of work rooms on board, among them eight laboratories, one hangar for large equipment and fully automated meteorological stations.

The Sonne spends most of its time in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

It's in Auckland to mark 40 years of the German New Zealand Science Co-operation agreement.

There is an open day on Wednesday.

Paul Goldsmith, the minister of science and innovation, will visit the vessel on Monday.
