Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee © RNZ / Alexander Robertson Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee is on his way to Washington for a high-level meeting on countering Islamic State.

It's been called by US Defence Secretary Ash Carter and will be attended by ministers from the more than 60 countries in the alliance.

"As we have seen recently, Daesh continues to pose a significant threat not only to the citizens of Iraq and Syria but also the wider world," Mr Brownlee said before he left.

"We will be discussing the progress being made across all the coalition lines of effort, including the military campaign."

New Zealand has about 140 troops in Iraq helping train local forces, and recently extended the commitment to November 2018.
