Seeking their first African championship since 1982, Ghana have roared into the quarters of the tournament.

Four-time champions Ghana have advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2017 African Cup of Nations with a 1-0 victory over Mali in Group D.

Captain Asamoah Gyan gave the Black Stars the lead in the 21st minute and Ghana made it hold for their second win in as many matches.

Ghana, whose last African title came back in 1982, advanced into the quarters for the sixth consecutive continental championship.

Mali remained on one point while Egypt have one point ahead of their second match of the group later Saturday against Uganda in Port-Gentil.

Avram Grant's Ghana side nearly jumped into the lead in the 17th minutes but Andre Ayew struck his left footer wide right after a fine feed from Christian Atsu.

Mali had their first chance two minutes later but Molla Wague's header went over the bar.

The Black Stars struck the back of the net when Jordan Ayew chipped a ball over to Gyan and the Al-Ahli striker sent a powerful diving header past Mali keeper Oumar Sissoko.

After their collective celebration dance, the Ghana players showed "Get Well Baba" shirts, referring to Black Stars defender Baba Rahman who will likely miss the remainder of the season after a severe knee injury in the team's opening match of the finals.

Ghana did not really push forward much in the second half and it was Mali who had more chances after the break.

Moussa Marega sent a header right at the Ghana keeper Brimah Razak in the 50th and then shot well over the bar from just eight yards out two minutes later.

Hamari Traore blasted a long distance shot into the side netting at the 69-minute mark.

Razak then saved the three points for Ghana in the 90th minute as the Spanish-based keeper made a great stop on Kalifa Coulibaly's shot from seven yards.
