Former junior world champion Gill heaved a 21.01m throw which was more than half a metre further than needed to compete at this year's world championships in London. It is also meets qualifying criteria for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The throw came at a meet in Lower Hutt, four months after placing ninth at the Rio Olympics with a best distance of 20.80m.

Compatriot Tom Walsh, who has a best of 22.21m, won bronze in Rio, where Gill was affected by a foot injury.

Gill, 22, has long spoken of a desire to clear 21m.
