Gleeson cements first-choice Portland job

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/07/2016

All White Jake Gleeson is poised to remain the Portland Timbers' first-choice goalkeeper for the rest of the Major League Soccer season after the departure of his closest rival.

Ghanaian international team-mate Adam Kwarasey has been transferred to Rosenborg BK in the Norwegian top flight, having been shut out on return from injury by the in-form Gleeson.

Kwarasey was sidelined for two months by a hand injury, handing Gleeson the gloves for the last 15 games, in which he has conceded just 19 goals.

That form, which saw Gleeson twice named in the MLS team of the week, meant there was no room for 40-game stopper Kwarasey upon return.

Kwarasey's departure was announced by Timbers technical director Gavin Wilkinson, a former All Whites international.

Portland are unbeaten in their last nine games and are sixth out of 10 teams in the Western Conference with three months remaining in the season.
