The Black Sticks and Women's Black Sticks will both take part in an annual "Hockey Pro League" from January 2019, encompassing the best nine national hockey sides in the world.

The new league, which will run from January to June, will see the nine sides compete in home-and-away fixtures on a weekly basis.

It has taken four years to come to fruition.

"It embodies everything our 10-year strategy aims to achieve - making hockey a global game that inspires the next generation," International Hockey Federation president Narinder Dhruv Batra said.
