New Zealand goalkeeper Jake Gleeson has won a place in Major League Soccer's team of the week after helping his Portland Timbers deliver a clean sheet.

Gleeson pulled off four saves, including a deflection in injury time, in a 0-0 draw against New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

It was the 26-year-old's second successive shutout, making the most of an extended run of games.

Gleeson transferred to Portland in 2010 and hadn't played for the first team since 2011, but when first-choice keeper Adam Kwarasey was injured in April he became custodian.

In 13 starts, Gleeson has conceded just 14 goals for a Timbers side who are seventh out of 10 teams in the Western Conference.

His form may present a selection poser when Kwarasey returns from a hand ligament tear this month.

The last of Gleeson's eight All Whites internationals was in 2014.
