New Zealand choreographer Parris Goebel missed out on the gongs, but her work has lit up the MTV's Video Music Awards in New York.

Rihanna opened the show with a routine by Goebel, who had arrived at the event at Madison Square Garden dressed in a Polynesian-themed outfit.

She tweeted: "Work hard & anything is possible. Thank you for this @rihanna. I dreamed of this since I was a little girl! #VMAs."
