New Zealand's participation in the UN's Golan Heights truce supervision operation has been extended through to September 2018.

Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee announced the decision on Thursday.

New Zealand has been part of the operation since 1954, and has eight military personnel in place.

The observers monitor the situation along the borders of Egypt, Israel, Lebanon and Syria.

New Zealand's contingent will continue to operate under the leadership of former Chief of the Army Major General Dave Gawn.
