Proven track cyclist Regan Gough has clinched the national criterium title at his third attempt.

The 20-year-old held off highly-rated rivals Alex Frame and Alex Gate in a sprint finish following a tense duel around a circuit in Takapuna.

Gough was a member of the gold medal-winning pursuit team at the 2015 track world championships.

The women's race was won by Raquel Sheath who, like Gough, was part of a pursuit team who placed fourth at the Rio Olympics.

Sheath, who was coming off a break, beat Kirstie James and Georgia Danford to the line in another tight finish.
