Government moves to simplify tax refunds

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 19/06/2017

The government intends to simplify the tax system for individuals.

Under its proposals, taxpayers whose only income is from salary, wages or investments won't have to file tax returns to claim refunds or calculate extra tax.

A consultation document has been released for public feedback.

Revenue Minister Judith Collins says many people might be owed a refund or have tax to pay and not realise it.

That could happen if they hadn't worked for the full year, had fluctuating earnings, or some of their income was taxed at the wrong rate.

Under the proposed new system, IRD would calculate and issue refunds or let people know they have tax to pay without taxpayers having to do anything else.
