Military authorities in South Korea, Japan and the United States all confirmed the Monday morning launch of the intermediate range missiles, CNN reported.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said three landed inside Japan's exclusive economic zone and described North Korea's action as "extremely dangerous".

Mr McCully said the decision to launch the missiles was "highly provocative and deeply detrimental to regional and global security".

"It is deeply frustrating that North Korea continues to show such disregard for UN Security council resolutions, which prohibit all such missile launches," he said.

"New Zealand strongly urges North Korea to cease such tests and abide by its international obligations."
