Govt falls well short of land target

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 12/04/2016

The government has so far secured only 25ha of the 500ha it promised for housing development in Auckland.

Housing Minister Nick Smith last year took media on a tour of various pockets of publicly-owned sites, described as surplus land, which were being eyed up by officials.

Dr Smith was given $54 million in last year's budget for the project, touted as a key part of the government's plan to ease the city's housing shortage.

He told One News he was still confident he would secure the 500ha, but Labour thinks he'll fail.

Opposition housing spokesman Phil Twyford says he has documents, obtained under the Official Information Act, which show many of the selected sites were too small to build even one house on.

"This was a rushed policy which was scrambled together in the last minutes before budget day to appear as if National was doing something to address the housing crisis," he said.
