The government must provide financial support for important earthquake-strengthening work in Wellington, Labour says.

Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson is backing a call by the city's mayor, Justin Lester, for work on the capital's earthquake-prone buildings to be brought forward.

"The latest earthquakes have been a wake-up call to get this vital work done," he said on Friday.

"The cost is proving prohibitive for many people - we have many buildings that are yellow-stickered and the owners are really struggling to find the money to undertake repairs."

Mr Robertson says there are two options - making strengthening tax-deductible and providing low interest or no interest loans.

"Both options would suit different people and would give the ability to speed up works and not have the initial cost as a barrier."
