Govt proposes changes to building code

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/07/2016

The government is proposing changes to more than 30 building compliance rules.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says the code must keep pace with industry developments, best practice and new research.

There will be 32 new standards which include changes to requirements for glass barriers, safety glass, foil insulation and slip resistance on walking surfaces.

"The construction sector is growing at a phenomenal rate and building activity is at record levels," Dr Smith said on Wednesday.

"We need to ensure we maintain the standards of building work through this boom."

He wants public input to a consultation document that's been released.
