The government has announced a new, $1.7 million dollar anti-litter campaign, saying it's a risk to New Zealand's clean, green image.

Associate Environment Minister Scott Simpson says it's also about the harm plastic, paper and cans do to waterways, the marine environment and wildlife.

Litter and recycling bins will be installed in public places and there will be a national awareness campaign based on the Be a Tidy Kiwi brand.

"The best solution is where everyone responsibly disposes of their waste," Mr Simpson said.
