There will be 64,000 electric cars on New Zealand roads in the next five years if the government gets its way.

A new funding programme has been announced to help reach the target, which is double the current number.

The Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund will provide $4 million this financial year, and up to $6 million going forward.

Projects can receive up to 50 per cent funding if they showcase low emission vehicles in high-profile and visible ways that popularise the technology.

"They're cheaper to run than petrol and diesel vehicles and, because they're powered by our abundant renewable electricity supply, they'll reduce the amount of emissions that come form the country's vehicle fleet," Transport Minister Simon Bridges said.

The first funding rounds close in October with decisions expected in December.
