Govt should resettle Aust refugees: Greens

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/08/2016

The Greens are calling on the government to renew its offer to settle refugees and asylum seekers from Australian detention centres.

Australia and Papua New Guinea on Wednesday confirmed the Manus Island detention centre would close.

The Greens' human rights spokeswoman, Marama Davidson, says no announcement was made about what would happen to the detainees.

"Every day that these camps remain open is another day that people are living in limbo, facing abuse by guards and inhumane living conditions," Ms Davidson said on Thursday.

"New Zealanders have shown repeatedly that they are compassionate people who want to do their bit to help people fleeing persecution and conflict."

Ms Davidson says Prime Minister John Key should make it clear to his Australian counterpart, Malcolm Turnbull, that New Zealand is prepared to be part of a "humane solution" by offering to resettle the detainees.

The government offered in 2013 to resettle 150 detainees from Australian centres as part of its UN refugee quota.

Successive Australian governments have declined to take it up.
