Govt wants Kiwi teachers to come home

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/08/2016

The government is putting $9 million into a campaign to find more science, technology and maths teachers.

Education Minister Hekia Parata says there are enough teachers overall but not necessarily in the subjects where they're needed.

"We're launching a new recruitment campaign focused on bringing Kiwi teachers back home," she said on Friday.

"We'll also offer an extra 100 scholarships worth $1.8m a year for science, technology and maths subjects to lift the number of graduates in these areas.

"And we'll also invest nearly $1m in an Auckland programme to employ 40 new teachers."

Ms Parata said she'd been working with principals and sector groups to find solutions to teacher supply.

The Education Council is putting together a working group to consider whether teacher education programmes need adjusting.

"While there is no one silver bullet, these initiatives will help to ease the pressure," Ms Parata said.
