Govt wants to buy DHB's land for housing

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/07/2016

Counties Manukau DHB is negotiating with the government to sell 10ha of its land for housing development.

Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith says the vacant land has the capacity for about 250 South Auckland homes.

"The government will look to buy it at a fair market price," he said on Wednesday.

"Any housing development would need to contribute to the government's objective of increasing the supply of social and affordable housing."

So far four Auckland sites with a capacity for 940 homes have been bought with the $52.2 million allocated in last year's budget for the government's land housing programme.

A further $100m was allocated in this year's budget.
