Govt's message to Edgecumbe: stay out

There's still a risk to life in flood-stricken Edgecumbe and evacuated residents should stay out, says Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett.

As she went into parliament on Thursday, Ms Bennett told reporters she had just been briefed by Civil Defence.

"They have got it under control but there is still a risk of loss of life," she said.

"They've evacuated about half the people and are working on the other half through a range of emergency services.

"One of the things we have to put out there right now is we understand these are people's homes and they will be worried, but under no circumstances should people be looking at going back at the moment."

Ms Bennett said there was "a real risk" within the next 14 to 18 hours.

"So the message must be really clear - get out and stay out."

Ms Bennett said it could be at least three or four days before people could go back.

Civil Defence would make sure people knew as much as possible, as early as possible.
