More than five million trees will be planted across New Zealand next winter.

The planting of 5.5 million seedlings makes up just shy of 5000 hectares of the government's 15,000 hectare by 2020 target, Associate Primary Industries Minister Jo Goodhew said on Thursday.

The trees are being funded through the Afforestation Grant Scheme, now in its fifth year.

"It is pleasing to see 81 approved applications for this year's funding rounds, the same as last year, but with an additional 1918 hectares of land. This shows how the AGS is becoming better utilised by land owners," Ms Goodhew said.

"Now more than ever, forests are a vital part of our economy and our environment."
