MELBOURNE, Australia — Greater Western Sydney has joined Geelong in securing a second-round bye in the Australian Football League playoffs, beating city rival the Sydney Swans 12.19 (91) to 7.13 (55) in a qualifying match on Saturday.

Later Saturday, Adelaide beat North Melbourne 21.15 (141) to 12.7 (79) to advance to a second-round match next weekend against the Swans.

Geelong advanced Friday with a 12.13 (85) to 12.11 (83) win over the three-time defending champion Hawthorn Hawks. Hawthorn's Isaac Smith hooked a shot at goal from 40 meters in the final seconds, allowing the Cats to escape with the two-point win.

The Hawks next play the Western Bulldogs, who had an upset 14.15 (99) to 7.10 (52) win over West Coast to eliminate the Eagles.
