Greenpeace protest at Whanganui plant

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 18/05/2016

Greenpeace protesters have blocked the entrance to the Whiskas cat food factory in Whanganui, claiming it sources its tuna from a company connected to slavery and destructive fishing.

The six protesters chained themselves to a truck outside the factory in the suburb of Castlecliff on Thursday morning.

Greenpeace says parent company Mars has confirmed that it sources tuna from Thai Union.

It cited a New York Times story last year, which connected the use of forced labour to the Thai Union Group.

"Mars have known about human rights abuse in their seafood supply chain for at least 10 months," said campaigner Kate Simcock.

The Whanganui factory uses the tuna in Whiskas pouches sold in New Zealand and Australia, she said.
