Greens want more ACC help for victims

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 30/05/2016

The Greens want sexual violence victims to receive additional ACC-funded counselling without having to be diagnosed with a mental illness.

MP Jan logie says 16 hours of one-on-one therapy is available for victims but to access help after that they must be diagnosed with a psychiatric condition.

"Being the victim of sexual violence is not a mental illness," she said on Monday.

"It should be enough on its own to qualify survivors for the help they need."

Ms Logie and survivors advocate Louise Nicholas on Monday launched a campaign and a petition for the victims of sexual violence.

"ACC needs to change its processes so that people are able to access the help that they need," Ms Logie said.
