Members of the Football Ferns have paid tribute to striker Sarah Gregorius, who announced her retirement from international soccer.

Japan-based Gregorius, 29, revealed on social media she was hanging up her boots after 82 matches for New Zealand spanning seven years.

Coach Tony Readings said the speedy forward fashioned a fine career considering it was dogged for much of it by injury.

"She was always lively for our team and will leave a big hole," Readings said.

"It will be interesting what she chooses to do now because she has that determination and that personality that people like. Whatever she chooses to do she will be successful."

Fellow-striker Rosie White says Gregorius will be missed on and off the park.

"On the field and off the field she was a really important person and player.

"It will be a different team. Hopefully we get a new clown of the team coming in."
