The tyres of at least 12 vehicles in Greymouth have been stabbed in an early morning attack.

Police say the damage was from 2am onwards on Wednesday, with a screwdriver possibly being used.

Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Watson says it's believed other vehicles might have been targeted as well.

"We are asking any other victims to make contact with us and report the damage so that we may investigate," he said.

Police were also asking business owners and other members of the public to check if their security cameras had captured any of the offending.

With the investigation under way, vehicle owners were advised to park in well-lit areas and, if possible, in a garage or on a driveway.
