Antoine Griezmann scored a brace as Atletico Madrid returned to winning ways and moved into the La Liga Champions League places after a 3-0 home win over Valencia on Monday (AEDT).

Having lost to Barcelona and drawn at Deportivo La Coruna in their past two matches, three points were needed to lift Los Rojiblancos above Real Sociedad into fourth.

Fernando Torres, released from hospital after the worrying head injury he sustained against Depor, was well enough to watch from the stands and saw fellow striker Griezmann put the hosts ahead after just 10 minutes at the Vicente Calderon.

It was the Frenchman's 100th La Liga appearance for the club and his 55th goal.

Kevin Gameiro doubled the lead three minutes into the second half with an effort deflected off Eliaquim Mangala and that man Griezmann finished the job late on.

Las Palmas hammered rock bottom Osasuna 5-2 at Estadio Gran Canaria.

Jese, on loan from Paris St Germain, claimed his first goal for Las Palmas in the seventh minute but a quick-fire brace from Kenan Kodro gave Osasuna the half-time lead.

Marko Livaja, Unai Garcia (penalty) and Roque Mesa ensured that was short-lived before Jese returned to round out the scoring.

Relegation-threatened Depor scored a crucial 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Sporting Gijon, who were left six points adrift in 19th place.

Emre Colak missed from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute but Pedro Mosquera converted from a corner on the stroke of half-time to settle matters.

Elsewhere, Athletic Bilbao moved to the cusp of the European places with a 1-0 win over visiting Malaga.

Raul Garcia slotted a 72nd-minute penalty to gather the points and extend the Athletic's unbeaten run at the San Mames Stadium to 13 games.
