New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has made the most of his second appearance in the Indian Premier League, swatting 48 for Mumbai Indians in their 80-run thrashing of Delhi Daredevils.

Guptill's 42-ball knock was initially scratchy before he accelerated, blasting three sixes as he put on 98 for the second wicket off just 8.2 overs with livewire Krunal Pandya (86 off 37).

It set up Mumbai's 206-4 in Visakhapatnam before Delhi were dismissed for 126 in the final over.

New Zealand bowler Mitchell McClenaghan went wicketless for third-placed Mumbai but remains at the top of the tournament wicket-taking list with 17.

Despite his brilliant international form, Guptill was not bought at February's IPL player auction.

He was called into the defending champions' squad to replace injured West Indian Lendl Simmons in April but, after scoring 2 on debut, had to wait four weeks for Sunday's opportunity.
