A Hamilton man whose body was recovered from Waikato River died as a result of drowning, police say.

The body of Anthony Chanpraseuth, 31, was spotted in the river on Sunday morning by a member of the public out for a walk.

It was found about 200m north of the Hamilton Rowing Club.

A post-mortem examination on Monday indicated that Mr Chanpraseuth drowned.

Police say they are continuing to try and reconstruct his movements in the time leading up to his death.

They are wanting to speak to anyone who might have seen Mr Chanpraseuth in Hamilton city centre late on Saturday or early on Sunday.
