Hamilton mayoral race a cliffhanger

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 8/10/2016

Just 14 votes separate the two leading contenders in the race to be Hamilton's new mayor.

Andrew King has provisionally elected as the new mayor after receiving 8676 votes to edge out Paula Southgate who got 8662. Chris Simpson received 6331 votes.

King will have a wait until after special votes are counted and the final results are released on Thursday to be confirmed in the role but there is a chance of a recount if the final vote is close.

Julie Hardaker did not seek a third term as mayor.
