Lewis Hamilton survived a nervous start to win the Mexican Grand Prix, the reigning world champion closing the gap in his pursuit of Mercedes teammate and Formula One championship leader Nico Rosberg.

Rosberg, who finished second, still has a 19-point lead with just two races left and can claim his first career championship with just a second and third-place finish in the final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi.

German Sebastian Vettel was elevated to third after Max Verstappen was hit with a five second penalty, which saw the youngster relegated to fifth behind Red Bull teammate Australian Daniel Ricciardo.
