A man wielding a hammer has bashed a worker at a Waipukurau scrap metal business.

He went to the business on Cook Street at about 1.30pm on Friday and demanded cash, police say.

During a struggle he hit the staff member several times with the hammer and then fled.

The staff member is recovering after receiving treatment for abrasions to his face and bruising to his wrists and ribs.

The offender is described as a male Maori, aged between 19 and 20 years who is about 1.78m tall and of stocky build.

He was wearing a black hoody, possibly with white stripes down the sleeves, tight black pants and a woven black scarf covered his lower face. He was also wearing dark sunglasses.
