Hanmer Springs firefighters race weather

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 1/03/2017

Fire crews are under pressure to contain a large scrub fire in Hanmer before Friday's forecasted winds wreak even more havoc.

Northwest winds and high temperatures are due on Friday which may make it even more difficult for firefighters to battle.

Nearly 50 fire fighters are on the ground, with helicopters and monsoon buckets aiding the crusade.

Some residents chose to leave on Wednesday but a Fire Service spokesman said there was no danger to property.

The fires started about 12pm on Wednesday and covered 60 hectares in the drought-stricken North Canterbury area.
