Harawira's execution proposal 'ridiculous'

Prime Minister Bill English says Hone Harawara was being ridiculous when he proposed executing Chinese methamphetamine importers.

"It's kind of what you might expect from him, and it's one of the reasons he struggled to make positive contributions," Mr English said on Monday.

The Mana Party leader told Newshub's The Nation on Saturday China was the major source for the drug, and a strong message needed to be sent.

"We can pass a law to say any Chinese who brings meth or its precursors into this country is either going to jail for ever, is going to be sent back and never be allowed back again, or is going to get executed," he said.

Mr Harawira denied the policy was racist, saying it could be extended to everyone "and you've got to start somewhere".

"What I'm saying here, very clearly, is China is identified internationally as the greatest source of methamphetamine... we need to send a signal first there."
