Hartley fourth in endurance title race

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 20/11/2016

New Zealand driver Brendon Hartley's team have had to settle for fourth place in the World Endurance Championship after a podium finish in Bahrain.

The Porsche team of Hartley, Australian Mark Webber and German Timo Bernhard were third in the Six Hours of Bahrain race, beaten home by two Audi outfits.

After qualifying second-fastest, the trio produced a sound performance in Webber's last race before the former Formula One driver goes into retirement.

They were defending champions in the nine-leg championship but had too much ground to make up after struggling through the first three rounds with crashes or mechanical issues.

They bounced back to win four of the remaining six rounds but couldn't haul in three teams, including championship-winning Audi team of Marc Lieb, Neel Jani and Romain Dumas.
