Brendon Hartley's lean start to the World Endurance Championship is over after his team notched a comeback victory in the fourth round in Germany.

New Zealand driver Hartley, Australian Mark Webber and German Timo Bernhard overcame a puncture to their Porsche in the first hour, going on to with the Six Hours of Nurburgring race.

The win ended a frustrating start to the season for the series defending champions. They crashed out of the opening round in England before mechanical problems resulted in lowly finishes in Belgium and at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Two Audi teams were second and third in Germany, followed by the series-leading second Porsche team.

Hartley's team are eighth heading into the fifth of nine rounds, in Mexico in September.
