A Hastings dairy store owner has been punched in the head and threatened with an axe in a dispute over a loaf of bread.

The dispute began around 5pm on Wednesday when a man entered the Duke Street Dairy store in Mahora.

The dairy owner tried to remove the man from the store, but was punched several times causing bruising to both eyes, police say.

One of the shopkeepers then hit the offender with a stick and he fled the scene.

A short time later, however, the man's 26-year-old girlfriend approached the store armed with an axe and threatened the owners, police said.

The woman will appear in Hastings District Court on January 9, charged with possessing an offensive weapon and behaving threateningly.

Police are still searching for the man.
