Hastings shed burnt in suspicious fire

NZ Newswire logoNZ Newswire 14/02/2017

A suspicious fire in a shed in Hastings had no reason to start on its own because the building had no electricity, police say.

The fire started at 2.30pm on Sunday in a large cropping paddock on a rural property on the town's northern outskirts.

"The property is just down the road from [water park] Splash Planet and, due to the warm weather on Sunday, it is likely there would have been a number of people in the area" Detective Warren Simpson said.

"If anyone who was in the area around the time of the fire remembers seeing anything suspicious, we ask that they get in touch with us."
