A fiery car crash which claimed four lives in heavy fog at Hauraki Plains has been described by New Zealand police as a "sad and tragic" event as they appeal for witnesses to come forward.

The crash, between a white Toyota Corolla and a BMW, happened on State Highway 2 at Netherton on Saturday night.

The sole occupant of the BMW and three of five people in the Toyota were killed, Inspector Marcus Lynam said.

The two survivors were in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital.

The survivors were French tourists who had been in the country for a day, a person who helped out at the scene told Fairfax.

However, police are not saying anything about their identities until their next of kin have been informed.

There was heavy fog in the area at the time but police are not speculating on what caused the crash.

"Initial indications are that one vehicle ended up in a ditch and the other later caught fire following the crash," Insp Lynam said.

"Clearly, this is a terribly sad and tragic time for the families of those who have died," he said.

"We are appealing to any road users who witnessed the crash to please contact us."
